This lively, interactive lesson is designed for young pre-intermediate ESL learners (Stage 4, ages 10–11). The theme School Routine helps students talk confidently about their daily school life while practising key vocabulary, frequency words with time, tricky words, and a phonics sound pattern in meaningful contexts.
Throughout the lesson, learners practise describing routines, making choices, giving reasons, and answering open-ended questions using full sentences. The lesson integrates vocabulary development (school routine words), grammar focus (always / usually / often / sometimes / never + verb + time), phonics awareness (“ch” with /sh/ sound), and tricky word practice (possible, important).
Activities are highly visual, choice-based, and interactive, making them ideal for online 1:1 or small-group lessons (up to 4 students). The lesson is carefully scaffolded, moving step by step from discussion → vocabulary → speaking → grammar → movement → phonics & tricky words → creative design → games → final quiz, and finishes with a fun review quiz that celebrates learning and builds confidence.
Introduction & Personal Discussion (Hotspot i)
The lesson begins with guided discussion questions about school life. Teachers expand each question to show images and example answers, helping students activate prior knowledge and practise speaking about their own routines in a supported way.
Students find and show an item they use at school every day (e.g. pencil, book, bag). They describe the item in a few sentences, encouraging confidence, personalisation, and spontaneous speaking.
