This lively, interactive lesson is designed for Stage 4 ESL learners, ages 10–11, at Pre-Intermediate level. The seaside and summer holiday theme allows students to practise talking about past events, describing seaside scenes, using topic vocabulary, forming Past Simple sentences, recognising the phonics trigraph “spl”, and using the tricky words “decide” and “explain” in meaningful contexts.

The lesson combines vocabulary building with words such as horizon, tide, seabed, shallow, diving, jet skiing, lighthouse, and lifebuoy, a clear grammar focus on the Past Simple with time expressions, phonics work on spl, and tricky word practice with decide and explain. Students are encouraged to speak in full sentences, read aloud, make choices, remember information, and explain their answers.

Activities are visual, interactive, and varied, making them suitable for one-to-one online lessons or small online groups of up to four students. The lesson is scaffolded step by step, moving from discussion and image exploration → vocabulary recognition → speaking practice → grammar introduction → movement → phonics and tricky words → memory, sentence-building, wordsearch, and final review. It ends with a Wordwall quiz that reviews vocabulary, grammar, phonics, and tricky words in a fun, celebratory way.

Students begin by discussing topic-related questions in the opening hotspot. Each question can be expanded by clicking an arrow, allowing students to see supporting images and possible answers. This helps students understand the question, choose an answer, and extend their speaking.
