Teacher notes

This lively, interactive lesson is designed for Stage 4 ESL learners (ages 10–11). The theme is “Around the House”, allowing students to learn and practise house-related vocabulary, and apply tricky words (“could”, “only”) and /ir/ phonics through a variety of fun, scaffolded activities.

Students are encouraged to give full-sentence answers throughout, gradually developing their accuracy and fluency. Activities are short, visual, and choice-based, making them ideal for 1:1 or small-group online lessons. The lesson follows a clear progression from personal response warm-up → vocabulary → grammar → phonics/tricky words → fun language games → review, and ends with a celebratory recap quiz to consolidate learning and boost confidence.

Students are introduced to the lesson through a short question-answer speaking activity. The teacher shows the next hotspot and asks introductory questions related to the topic (e.g., “Which room do you like the best? Why?”). Students respond in full sentences, establishing the expectation of extended answers from the start.

Students play a game of “I Spy” with the teacher to warm up and activate prior knowledge. The teacher begins with clues (“I spy with my little eye, something that is fluffy”), and students guess. Each student has a turn to give a clue, building descriptive language and vocabulary recall in a playful context.

Eight house-related words are introduced and reinforced:

apartment, study, balcony, hallway, closet, roof, cellar, porch
