This lively, interactive lesson is designed for Stage 4 Pre-Intermediate ESL learners, ages 10–11. The ocean theme allows students to practise sea creature vocabulary, giving opinions, describing animals, using relative clauses with that / which, recognising the phonics trigraph squ, and understanding the tricky words become and depend in meaningful contexts.

The lesson combines vocabulary building with eight ocean creatures: stingray, barracuda, hammerhead, manta ray, swordfish, pufferfish, bluefin tuna, and great white shark. Students practise these words through matching, labelling, Tic-Tac-Toe, picture recognition, description games, sorting tasks, debate, and a final Wordwall quiz.

The grammar focus is relative clauses with that / which, helping students extend simple sentences into more detailed descriptions, such as: The pufferfish is a fish that can become round when it is scared. The phonics focus is the trigraph squ → /skw/, practised through words such as squid, squeeze, square, squeak, squash, squad, squirrels, squishy, squiggle, and squat. The tricky words become and depend are introduced through ocean-themed example sentences and choice-based gap-fill activities.

The lesson is suitable for one-to-one and small-group online lessons. It is highly visual, choice-based, and interactive, encouraging students to explain their answers in full sentences. The lesson moves from discussion → vocabulary recognition → speaking practice → grammar building → movement → phonics and tricky words → matching and debate → sorting → final review quiz.

Students begin the lesson by discussing ocean-themed questions. Each question can be expanded by clicking an arrow, allowing teachers to show images and possible answers. This supports comprehension and helps students answer with more confidence.
