Teacher notes

This lively and interactive Stage 1 lesson introduces young beginner ESL learners (ages 7–8) to zoo animals through listening, speaking, and action-based games.

The grammar focus—“I see a ___.”—helps students describe what they see while exploring fun animal-themed visuals and sounds.

The lesson integrates vocabulary building, phonics (/m/ sound), grammar practice, and interactive games to strengthen speaking confidence and comprehension. Each activity is short, visual, and movement-based, ideal for both 1:1 or small-group lessons online or in person. Students progress from single words to short descriptive sentences and end with a joyful review game celebrating what they’ve learned.

Students listen and respond physically by standing up if they like certain animals.

Example prompts: “Stand up if you like lions!” / “Stand up if you like tigers!”

This fun activity introduces zoo animals while encouraging listening comprehension and physical engagement.
