Teacher notes

This fun, fully interactive lesson is designed for young beginner ESL learners (Stage 1, ages 7–8). The theme Weather introduces students to six common weather conditions and helps them use the grammar structures “It is …” and “It isn’t …” to describe and contrast weather. Phonics practice focuses on the /sh/ sound using the words ship, shop, shell, and shine, supporting early reading and pronunciation skills.

The lesson blends clear vocabulary input, simple grammar practice, phonics development, movement activities and engaging games to keep learners active and motivated. Activities are short, visual and highly interactive—ideal for 1-to-1 or small-group lessons. The sequence moves step-by-step from warm-up → vocabulary → speaking → grammar → movement → phonics → games → final review, giving students many chances to practise speaking in short, complete sentences.

Students begin with a playful drawing challenge, quickly sketching weather pictures they see on screen. This activates prior knowledge and builds excitement while introducing the lesson theme.

Target vocabulary includes: sunny, rainy, snowy, cloudy, windy, and stormy. Students repeat each word with the sentence “It is …” and practise recognition through quizzes, treasure hunts and image-based games.

Students spin a wheel or view images and choose the correct weather word, saying full sentences aloud such as “It is sunny” or “It is rainy.” This builds confidence and fluency using simple descriptive language.
